Twitter is known to get people in trouble, after years you would think people have learnt (or learned, whatever the case may be) from others but apparently not.
The Olympic Games is a meeting place for athletes across the globe to compete amongst each other, to see who the TOPDOG is. The games are known for their value and integrity. They hold each athlete responsible to respect each other and the culture, while participating.
Obviously someone didn’t explain to Greek Athlete, Voula Papachristou, that twitter is a national social network, and the media is always watching for someone to tweet something controversial . Voula gave them just what they were looking for.
On Sunday, While triple jumper , Papachristou was preparing for her event in the London Olympics she decided to go on her twitter page to tweet, what she thought was a funny joke, but instead the tweet was very insensitive and racist, And not Funny AT ALL–At least it could have been funny, Come on, all this for Nothing – She tweeted :
“With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!”
Her tweet provoked a bevy of ill responses, and many Greeks called for her dismissal from the Olympic team.
OMG, how did she not know the statement was out-right racist? The Olympic committee acted quickly, and axed Papachristou from the game. A committee spokesperson released this statement:
“Papachristou was placed outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic Movement.”
Greece was already on Papachristou trial for retweeting messages from Golden Dawn party, which has directly criticized Greek’s prime minister and his stance on immigration.
Papachristou still didn’t understand what the fuss was about; she tweeted about people over reacting for something that she feels was a joke.
“That’s how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don’t press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!”
But after Papachristou got the memo that she was out of the games for good, she suddenly had a change of heart. On Wednesday, Papachristou finally gave a real apology on Twitter and Facebook quoting
“Unfortunate and tasteless, my dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races,”
The Greece Democratic Party wasn’t buying the apology, releasing this statement;
“Let her make any miserable ‘jokes’ on social media while watching the games on TV, She definitely cannot represent Greece in London.” –(Now that was kinda of funny, Ha Ha)
I hope Papachristou find some better material in the future,even some racist insensitive jokes are funny, but that wasn’t even funny, she got booted and didn’t even get a laugh. Now that is a waste of material, and a potential Olympic medal.
