Peter Moses Pleads Guilty to 2 Counts Of Murder

Durham, NC - Peter Moses, who led a polygamous cult called the Black Hebrews,  has pleaded guilty to the 2010 murders of a four-year-old boy Jadon Higganbothan, 4 he believed was gay and a girlfriend Yvonne McKoy, 28 after she tried to leave the sect.

The 27-year-old Moses was allegedly the leader of radical religious sect, whose members comprised a number of women and children who called him “Lord.” Moses reportedly lived together with at least three of those women, who counted themselves as his “wives,” and nine children and in a one-bedroom Durham home. Moses is the biological father of all the children, except for Jadon.

The Associated Press identified Moses’ sect as the Black Hebrews, whose members believe they have descended directly from the ancient tribes of Israel. The Black Hebrews are also said to believe that a forthcoming “race war” will leave blacks dominant and supreme, according to court documents cited by the News-Observer.

Moses reportedly feared that Jadon might be gay because the boy’s father had left his mother Vania Sisk, who was one of Moses’ “wives.” Furthermore, he is also said to have witnessed  Jadon hitting the backside of another young boy.

Moses, who is believed to have suffered from bipolar disorder, pulled Jadon into the garage of the house and shot him in the head with his mother’s gun. He had two of the women set out speakers in the garage to play loud music with The Lord’s Prayer in Hebrew so the others could not hear.

He made the cult members put the young boy’s body in a suitcase and store it in his master suite until it began to smell.

Ms McKoy was shot just before Christmas in 2010 after Moses learned she could not have children and wanted to leave the group. On the day she was killed, Ms McKoy had ran to a neighbour’s home and asked to call her mother who lived in Washington D.C.

The neighbour, who didn’t call police, told prosecutors that Moses and the other women came out of the house and struggled with Ms McKoy and dragged her back inside.

A witness told prosecutors he then beat her throughout the day, with the women joining in on at least one occasion.

They then attempted to strangle Ms McKoy with an extension cord.

Ms McKoy begged for her life but Ms Sisk (Jadon’s mother) got the gun Moses had used to kill her son and, playing the same religious music played during Jadon’s murder, she shot Ms McKoy several times, killing her, prosecutors said.

The group threw a party a few days later where Moses showed the woman’s body to his mother, sister, Shiela Moses, 20, and brother P. Leonard Moses, 21. 

Prosecutors said McKoy had written diary entries begging ‘Lord’ not to kill her.

The case came to police’s attention in February when a young woman escaped from the house at 2109 Pear Tree Lane and reported the bodies.

The decomposing bodies were found stuffed in plastic rubbish bags and lying in shallow graves in the former backyard of Moses’ mother, Sheilda Harris, 57.

She lived at 2622 Ashe Street until early this year.

Peter Lucas Moses, 27, will face two life sentences for shooting to death Jadon Higganbothan and Antoinetta Yvonne McKoy but will avoid the death penalty because he has agreed to testify against others who acted as accessories in the slayings, including his brother, sister and mother
