Losing is not an option at Tim King’s Chicago Urban Prep School. As the first all black male, public school in Chicago the school is seeing unprecedented triumphs. The all male charter school celebrates it’s 3rd successful year in a row after all of it’s 2012 graduating seniors have been accepted into college. Located on Chicago’s south side the school caters to students who the system may have given up hope on.
A 100% college bound graduating class is about unheard of for any high school.
The school started with kids whose futures had been left for dead by their public schools: Only four percent of the school’s incoming freshmen were reading at grade level when they arrived on campus.
Most of the students came in four years ago with a lot against them. They come from poor neighborhoods.
But now all 85 graduating seniors are off to college including, Vernon Cheeks, 17, who was accepted to 14 schools.
“It taught me how to be resilient. It also taught me how to be accountable for my own actions,” he told CBS Chicago about his standout high school program.
Urban Prep CEO Tim King says the school is so successful because, “We devote time and energy to those students so that they understand they can do well and they can have success if they modify their behavior.”
This is a beautiful thing.. A lot of adults could use that very same advice. CONGRATS!
