The Dream: “Blacks Can’t Do Soul Music Anymore!”

BLACKS CAN NO LONGER DO SOUL MUSIC = Singer-songwriter The Dream SAYS.

Singer/Songwriter THE DREAM who frequently collaborates with Beyonce made a bold statement recently to UK’s The Guardian, Terius Nash told the British publication blacks can’t do soul music anymore because of the world’s fascination with white artists doing soul music.

To support his statement, he made an example out of Adele’s success as a soul artist compared to Beyonce being known for her pop sound. The Dream said, “It’s called rhythm and blues; they just took the blues out of it for so long. What’s crazy is that blacks can’t do soul records any more. We love Adele singing it, but Beyoncé singing it? No.” Nash went on to say, “No, the tempo’s too slow, gimme the club hit. Now the Blacks in America are responsible for the Pop records, and everybody else is singing soulful records. It’s weird to me. We’re pigeonholed over there.”

In a sense, The Dream is right. Soulful albums from Adele and Amy Winehouse sell millions of records in an industry where selli

ng more than 50,000 copies is equivalent to going platinum back in 2000 and black artists are made to be pop singers. Usher and Beyonce both started out as R&B stars and both have abandoned straight up R&B for the greener pastures of pop music.

I would love to insert “If you Liked It Then You Should Of Put A Ring On It” but I don’t know how blacks could marry R&B.  All jokes aside,  this is such an eye opening statement that I’m at a loss for words. I’m really feeling like we are heading to a period where being black no longer will stand for certain types of music. It will not stand for certain types of food.. It might not even stand for cherry kool-aid (insert lol here) anymore.  Blacks are abandoning everything that makes them culturally in-tune for greener pastures. For some day it seems like being black will only stand for poverty and nothing good..

How do feel about this – Can it be fixed or is this not a problem?

I dont understand this and I will no longer watch American Idol there is not one black girl in the final round why is that?

Bullshit. We can still do soul music. But, soul music won't sell therefore, the r&b artists SELLOUT and do al that other BS. Aloe Blacc is one artist who truly can make some good soul music. Look him up.

He makes a lot of sense. These companies don't put money behind soul music singers over here, that's a fact. But if you have someone like an Adele, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone who does the music, they get all types of dollars behind them. Black artist are very much pigeon holed.

I think we got soul music on lock. Unfortunately, this era is sell outs. And it's not just R&B and Hip Hop, a friend said metal and alternative are dying too. Maybe some new producers and record label owners would solve this, but these teens are buying up all superficiality.

I guess there's no soul in soul music anymore. Only false music.

Oh, and I agree with him. black soul music is no longer as readily available. you have to look hard for it, and like Ani Raina said the radio will readily play Adele, but not Syleena Johnson or Jaguar Jones. Once again, resorts back to the industry to me…

Ha-hum! SOUL DOES NOT HAVE OR BELONG TO A COLOR.
Its in everyone of us. Whether you use it to sing, dance, preach, or love. Every human has Soul. Just imagine if we were born identical. What a boring world this would be. Stop with the hating on whites.

Dream needs to shut his sellout simp ass up!!! Soul music still exists and goes under the radar. Angie Stone, Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, etc. are solid soul artists. Dream operates in the pop world where fads and sales matter. Not quality and sincerity.

Why not request real music on the radio then? They play the same songs on the radio over and over because those songs are popular and requested the most. I honestly dont even listen to the radio any more, MAYBE once or twice a month. I dont watch music videos//channels on tv anymore either. I personally prefer the old R&B and soul music over what is being put out now.
