Some students feel that this is the new segregation, but other students feel that the measure is very necessary.
Old Dominion University in VA, has decided to give Gay and Lesbian students a decision to live separate from other students. The University will offer separate housing for students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. The new living space will allow only gay and lesbian students to live and mingle amongst eachother. They call it “living learning communities” which allow groups of people with the same goals and interests to live together. I don’t understand how Gay and Lesbian student’s goals and interests are much different from that of straight students.
During a time when GLBT lifestyle is becoming more acceptable, this new concept, some feel, will cause problems with the gay students living openly with other students. Ellen Neufeldt of student engagement is quoted
“Living on a floor with people who may not be accepting of that, you take that into consideration. Housing is open to everyone who applies. This isn’t going to change that,”
Ellen also feels that this new plan when make the Gays and Lesbian more safe and away from harassment from other students.
One student at the school feels very indifferent from Ellen, Sally, a Junior at the school Quoted (And I have to agree with Her)
“I don’t think it’s a good concept, just singling them out and sticking them all together,” said Sally, Just because you’re gay is not gonna make you have things in common with them, same as anybody else.”
The students will receive a set of 9 dorm rooms inside of a residence hall with other students. Old Dominion was established in 1930 and has an enrollment of over 24,000 students.

Should Gay and Straight Students Be Separated?
Only if guys can share dorms with girls. Because no matter what pretty little lie you tell, most places don't allow co-ed living conditions for reasons of sexual nature be it concentual or not. So if a homosexual person can share living quarters with a person that is their sexual preference, then so should a heterosexual. Don't get me wrong, i'm not advocating either, but I can't argue with what's fair. I may not like it, but if it's fair then we all have to adjust.
I am on the fence. It is very obviously singling gay people out, but will the result be positive or negative? Common sense says negative, because that dorm will be known as the gay dorm, and any homophobic person will know exactly where to go to start some shit. I like it because it means that they don't have to be around the hateful people when they lay their heads down, but I have a feeling that it's going to end badly…

yes. I am under the belief that gay people, for the most have a mental condition that is not diagnosed. they also have something else that is wrong with them that they spread with just their presence. The mental part is the ( for the male) purposeful sodomization of others and the willful sodomizing by others onto them. that is the mental part. the unseen part is the spreading of their dis-ease with them selves onto others to make them so uncomfortable with themselves that they choose to condone such heathenistic activities and lifestyles, even with the full knowledge that what they do and how they live is not only contrary to nature, but also god. so in answering the question should gays be separated from straight students; I say yes because if I have raised my child one way and to have a naturally correct thinking mind, I dont want someone or something placing ds-ease into my impressionable childs mind with your abnormal behaviors and actions.

If you raised your child on what you believe is a strong foundation, then you must also sit back and let him/her make decisions based on that and not be afraid. Whatever decision they make, if you did the best you could do, then it is not your cross to bare. Not saying I believe in homosexuallity, but it's their decision. The story of the prodigal son is about just such a child who made the decision to live opposite of what he was raised on, but he came back. But, it was also just as much about his brother who stayed, but yet became bitter and jealous. So trust in what you believe is right and love them, even for what you believe they do wrong. I am one of the most Biblically incorrect people you could know, but if I'm not mistaken, isn't that what the Bible says God does to us?
shawna, "gay" has spread across the country like a wildfire. I would say that maybe 20 years ago, you would never even think of seeing two men kissing on tv, much less in public ( outside of san fran or atlanta). kids are taking on mannerisms and attitudes alluding to being gay more than they are taking on the mannerisms and actions of their born sexes. we have made many excuses for gay;i.e.,they are born that way or I am a woman in a mans body. where do they get this from? you can liken it to being in church and catching the holy ghost.. these people have caught the gay ghiost and ran with it. this situation is really ridiculous. instead of articles being written about the disparity of education attainment of blacks and jobs, we spend time on whats going on with gays. you as black people should be ashamed to carry the banner of gay when they dont fight for you. noone fights for black people, but we fight for everyone. gay is an act done behind closed doors (hopefully). you cant, in many situations, distinguish a gay person from anyone else, except when they tell you..but you can find a black person.

@ Bridgette, Rub off? Not for me. I know who I am, never been confused. I don't dislike gays but I rather not be around them. The act is abnormal to me. I'm a ol' skool country man and a lot of stuff I will never accept. They can be whatever they want to as long as they do that from a distance. You dont know anyones circumstances: people are born hermaphrodites, molested as children, & some just like the same sex for whatever reason. I attend Humboldt University we have this same concept its great for ppl to mingle and live with those who they share similar interests with. Most college students come from different cities have no family of friends near by so being comfortable living on campus is easier that way. We also have residence halls for 21+, freshmen, honor students, and many other housing themes. Its a great idea to me its nothing about segregation at all!
The worst thing that happened in recent history is the abolishment of dont ask, dont tell. what gays do is behind closed doors, they need not rules or laws to protect them.
