Oprah and her network OWN are currently in New Delhi, India filming…….. She has has quite an eventful time in the country. O’s bodyguards even got into a scuffle with the media and were detained by the police. Winfrey called the country “The Greatest Show On Earth.”
Over the weekend she attended the Jaipur Literature Festival and spoke to the crowd about some of her thoughts ranging from arranged marriages, twitter and even her thoughts looking back on the James Frey scandle.
A few excerpts from the speech:
Twitter is an hour of my time doing nothing
When I’m on Twitter, I think I could be reading a book. I read somewhere that when you’re on Twitter, it has the same effect on you as alcohol and drugs. Sometimes when I’m on it, I think what am I doing? I tweet, then I answer someone, then another person, and then an hour is gone. An hour of my time doing nothing
I’m too old for marriage
I live in a country that allows me to have the choice of not marrying. If I would have married, he would have been a wonderful husband, but I’ll be honest that we would have been divorced by now. I’m my own person, and I find it difficult to conform to other people’s ideas about me. And being married does call for some conformity. I respect the women of India who were in arranged marriages, which later turned into love marriages. But that’s just not a part of the way I think because I wasn’t brought up in this culture. And I think I’m too old now. I was engaged once in my 30s for a while, and like most women I just wanted to see if he cared enough to want to marry me. And then I told my friend that I don’t just have cold feet, my feet are in a bucket of cement.
Oprah also responded to a question on how she felt now looking back at the James Frey controversy:
“I was so into that James Frey book; people would tell me it’s impossible for someone to get their teeth pulled out by the dentist without anesthesia, and I would defend him. Then I found out that he had made up parts of the book and I was very disappointed.
People later told me that I demolished him on my show, and I saw it again many years later, and let me tell you, it was 100% my ego trying to defend the book club, the brand. I realized I had more compassion for murderers. I didn’t give him a chance to explain. I apologize for the way I did it.”
Oprah asked the audience to sign her ‘no phone while driving ‘thing’.' Texting while driving is stupid. In India, it’s insane! It’s insane because people don’t even obey the red lights.
