” Every single girl is going to leave here with something greater to offer the world other than her body”
Back in 2007 Oprah sent millions to South Africa to create the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Oprah saw a dire need to help struggling Africans with their education.
The great gesture did not come without backlash and turmoil . Some people thought Oprah should have created her Academy in America, where so many African-Americans continue to struggle. Some even quoted Oprah’s idea as being indulgent for her own attention. To further add fire to the flames, a woman working at the school was accused of abusing the students shortly after the school opened. In addition the director filed a defamation claim against Oprah in Philadelphia.
5 years ago Oprah spent 40 million dollars to create the Academy. 72 out of the 75 girls graduated on Saturday. All of the girls are going to Universities in South Africa, and some will even further their education in the United States. With tears of joy in her eyes, Mom Oprah spoke on the eve of the Graduation at a ceremony:
We’re taking a victory lap here, for transformation
Oprah said
Every single girl is going to leave here with something greater to offer the world other than her body, “I know what it’s like to be a poor girl with your heart’s desire to do well in the world,” she added. “I chose to use my philanthropy to do what I know
A new class will start on This week. Congrats to the Girls
