Black people don’t tip. How many people will be quick to say this is a stereotype and simply not true.. I’m going to be the first black person to tell you that it’s true. I can not tell you how many times I have been around, I don’t want to call them “lower class black people”, but I don’t know what else to call them, that don’t tip.
One time I took this chick to the Cheesecake Factory cause no one had ever taken her any place halfway decent. Anyway I paid the bill and left a 25% tip because the waitress did a good job. Will you believe I turned my back for a second and this chick had picked up some of the money off the table stating that was too much??? WTF. I had to tell her to put that back down.. What was a extra few dollars going to do to me.
Now, Im sure I’m not the only person who has experienced this.. I often hate going out seeing people leave $2 tips after they have received great service. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong. I just know that when you give money the universe brings it back to your triplefold.
What is a bad tip? Generally a good tip is 20%. It used to be 15% but has been raised. I’m not saying take pity on the people who work off of tips. I’m just saying that put yourself in their shoes and also what is $2 extra dollars going to do to you?
With black people being known not to tip well often times someone will give bad service just off of that notion. Some blacks will leave a good tip anyway after getting bad service, just so that they realize not all are bad tippers.. I used to do that, but now if you give me bad service I’m leaving you a bad tip. That’s it, that’s all. Some may even over tip to compensate.. One has to realize that ALL never exists. You never know.
So I ask why are black people such bad tippers? From my personal observations I will say that often times they really can’t afford to be eating out, yet instead of opting to stay home and cook they go out eat and try to save a few bucks when it comes to the tip.
Blacks usually make a lot less money than their white counterparts. But in general, if you get a group of black professionals in their late 20′s and 30′s they are more than likely to tip well above standards.
Some would say that the cheap tipping is passed down from their parents. I don’t know if this is true or not. We never went out to eat when I was younger. We were way too poor for that.
Now on to the part where someone always has to add that other races are the same… No blacks are not the only group of people who tip cheaply. Foreigners often times may not tip all. Why? Because it’s not customary to tip in their country.
Which brings me to ask: Why are we expected to pay the bills of waitstaff, cab drivers and others in the United States? Why is the company not responsible for paying them more? We basically pay the restaurants for the food and pay their employees for them.

I believe in tipping 20% but if they show off I start deducting. If you expect to get a good tip I expect to get good service. Point Blank Period! But most Black people do tip that famous $5… SMH!!!

Not all of us but too many of us definitely are! I have been out with friends, family, and co-workers and they work the waiter or waitress to death and talk to them like they are their personal slaves but when its time to tip they leave a very small amount or nothing at all. I’ve been with a party of 10 at Red Lobster and the only tip that was left was my 5 bucks! So yes a lot of us are very poor tippers but we demand top notch service in an instant!

NOT TRUE!! I was a cocktail waitress many years ago and can empathize with those in that profession. I am a very good tipper sometimes 50%!!! and I make it a point to tip even when service is bad because of this stereotype!!

My husband & i always leave a Good tip! we have an agreement that whoever pays the other automactically leave the Tip, it always work out perfect 4 us & the Server!

I’ve been out with white people who don’t tip AT ALL. Some black folks don’t know how to tip but I don’t think it is a racial thing. I usually tip 20% because I remember the difference it made when I was in the hospitality industry
I live in flint, mi one of the hardest hit areas in the country during this depression that were in. Myself and a few of my co-workers did a study for a another’s co-workers class. We came to the conclusions
white people tip on average lower than any other races! White people fell like you owe it to them to server them like Kings! On other hand you do have the those in the other races as well! There are those in this world who treat other races like shit and that why you don’t get shit

I disagree. My husband and I always tip well. Unless the service is bad. We will still tip, but gauge by the level of service we receive. Don’t think you gonna get a 20% tip when you give 5% service.

I think it’s more generational, possibly even cultural. I don’t think it’s race related. I see young people of all races not leave tips when they eat out. It’s like they don’t know they SHOULD or aren’t mature enough to know that servers rely on tips as most make less than the minimum wage. Also living in NYC, and being exposed to all cultures on a daily basis, I can tell you for certain that some cultures are not aware of “tipping practices”. To lay this at the feet of black people is crude and wrong!
i do not tip well for horrible service but i will tip. Yesterday I took one of the mothers of the church to Uno’ s and the trold the guy in a shy lil voice that she didn’t want onions in the pizza and he didn’t hear. He brings out the pizza and there are onions in it. We say something about and the waiter apologies for it and offers to make us another one without onions. Mother says no cuz she didn’t want to waste food with so many without. The waiter then says oh no ma’am we don’t want you to be sick, we will make another pizza and you can keep this one AND they didn’t charge me. Then the manager came over and assured us we had nothing to worry about. That waiter received a good tip, the mistake was OURS not his but he still make it right.
