BEIJING – China A two-year-old girl Wang Yue wandered alone onto a busy market alley and was ran over by two vans and left for dead by nearly 18 passers-by in the South China city of Foshan last week.
She was crushed twice by hit-and-run drivers and lay badly injured, yet a total of 18 people walked, cycled or drove past her body and none of them stop to help.
Finally, an elderly woman who scavenges for trash took action, pulling Wang to the side of the road and shouting for her parents.
The girl remains in a coma with massive head injuries, her brain stem reflexes were absent and her pupils no longer respond to light. She is in a coma. Doctors say if she does ever wake up she will more than likely remain in a vegetative state.
The man who allegedly drove the second van, surnamed Jiang, was arrested about 9pm on the evening of the accident. The first van driver, named Hu, surrendered to police on Sunday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the street cleaner who came to Yueyue’s aid seven minutes after she was first hit has received a 25,000 yuan ($3800) reward from the local government.
The rest of the country has started to do some soul searching since seeing the video.. A few people seen on the video who didn’t stop to help claim that they didn’t see the little girl:
The woman, who was walking through the market with her five-year-old daughter at the time, claimed she and her daughter were frightened after seeing blood spattered on the road.
The woman said she believed Yueyue had been injured in a fall while playing and did not know she had been struck by two vans.
A shopkeeper who also featured in the shocking CCTV footage said he had been harassed by customers since the incident.
The footage shows him walking out of his plumbing shop and apparently looking at the girl before leaving, however the shopkeeper claimed not to have seen her.
“[I swear to the God] if I had seen the girl, I would die in your face,” the Shanghai Daily News reported him as saying.
A motorcyclist who rode away from the tragedy said it was too dim and he believed crying sounds were coming from a nearby shop.
The cleaner, identified as 58-year-old Chen Xianmei, said she only did what she believed was right and did not think she deserved the reward.
However, she believed people would accuse her of seeking fame if she rejected the reward. She plans to donate some of it to help with the girl’s medical expenses.
This incident follows a series of recent incidents in which seemingly innocent people who helped strangers in distress were blamed or sued for causing their troubles. Those people are cold animals. Heartless, reminds me of some people on my facebook page… This is the type of stuff that happens when people mind their business… SMH, I cried watching this video. I will crack jokes on people all day, but I will also be the first to help someone in need. And the law should really stop allowing people to sue people who have saved their unappreciative azz from dying.

Who says you had to bring her to the hospital?? Call for help. They left her there because girls are seen as less than in China. It used to be okay to kill of female offspring if you felt you had too many children. They left that girl for dead because of cultural conditioning and that doesn’t change overnight

There're so many wrong people in this scenario that it makes me cringe. The people who passed by without a second thought are just as bad; they may as well have run over the poor girl with a car, too. She's a lost cause now, and all we can do is pray and hope that nothing near as bad and unfortunate as this happens again. I'm not all for the "eye for an eye" mentality, but all of those people very well deserve some sort of discipline, as her tattered life was left in every single one of their hands, and they were given the opportunity to react.
