Taye Diggs "My Mom Always Knew I Would Marry a White Woman"

Actor Taye Diggs was well liked by black women after seeing him play Stella’s love interest in the 1998 movie “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.”  However after black women found out that Taye Diggs was married to a white woman the flames kind of cooled for him although he continued to be a successful actor.

Taye Diggs recently sat down with Sway on his Sirius XM Radio show to discuss his new book and his love life:

Taye Diggs  knew Idina Menzel was The One for him from the very beginning. He just hoped she felt the same.

MET+Costume+Institute+Benefit+Gala+Presents+2SsomwKHxfQlHow did Idina’s parents react the first time you met them? “When she took me home, her dad came out and I was like, ‘OK, well take off that hood then and let’s see,” Diggs  joked. “No, I’m just kidding! I said, ‘You’re tough with the fiery cross in your yard!”

All kidding aside, Diggs, 40, said he was “really lucky” to be accepted by his in-laws. “I don’t know what they felt on the inside, but I was very fortunate,” he explained. “They’re very loving and accepting. They’re great grandparents. I can’t lie, I had no issues there.”

What did you mother say when she found out you were marrying a white woman? “My mother said, ‘I told you!.  She always thought — I hate this, but I’m being honest — she said, ‘I always knew you were gonna marry a white girl!’ I hated her when I was young for saying that, but eventually, for whatever reason, that’s what happened. She loves my wife.”

Though the Chocolate Me author admits he and Menzel are often criticized for their interracial romance, it hasn’t affected their feelings for one another. “I get it, but that’s not my trip,” Diggs said. “I’m living my life and I found a woman who I love.”

Married since January 2003, Diggs and Menzel are parents to son Walker Nathaniel, 2.

I am so done.. I guess that was his mom’s way of saying that he has been a cornball since day one.. Truth be told sometimes we do meet black men who come off so corny that we think that only a white woman would be attracted to their personality.  (Kanye Shrug)

I’m just wondering though, are there any more black men out there who always knew they would marry a white woman? Cause the athletes always knew they would marry a black woman but somehow once they got rich they tripped off into a white woman.

Watch The Interview

Notice that Sway slid in the fact that he had a white woman too. LOL

It’s obvious from this small interview that Taye Diggs although dark skinned did not much identity with being black while growing up. It’s nice that Tay decided to write a book about his experiences growing up and  teach kids that race doesn’t matter and everyone bleeds the same. While the topic is admirable it’s target audience will be the mixed kids who are dealing with those issues and not the kids who are teasing them due to their bi-racial identity..

Dealing with life as a adult knowing all races bleed the same and are the same becomes common sense naturally when going out into the world dealing with diverse groups of people. However, no matter how good of treatment one may get a black person is bound to run into situations that make them understand the racial inequality thoughts of many of the white masses… That can not be taught in a book, but pick up in black history book and a black child has already been brought up to par on the history that is bound to repeat itself.

Digg’s second underlying audience will be dark skinned black men who do not realize that their darkness is what makes them crave a white woman in order to actually escape their blackness. I wish him luck on his project.

Props to him! His mama knew what he liked, his preferences, etc. Some people actually miss out on love because of the racial barriers they set up for themselves. Good to see he was open minded and found his forever woman.

I can’t believe that in 2011 we still hung up on the white woman thang. If he’s happy then good for him but if he thinks its about her being white then he’s is only deceiving himself. I’m a equal opportunity lover, just be yourself and we can go from there.

Women just weren’t checking for him, it happens. Just because darkskin men are in that doesn’t mean every single one is going to get the Wesley or Idris treatment. There has to be some Flavor flav’s out here…wayment Flav was getting women in his Public Enemy days though. Damn Taye…

Who cares? Ethnicity doesn’t matter when you love, & marry someone. I was married to a Colombian woman. Did that affect me? Hell no! Thanks God I am from the most most diverse city in the world (NYC).
