Why doesn't anyone care about homeless people?

Driving down the street tonight there was a slow moving figure crossing the street ahead of us. We laughed and said “someone’s trying to get hit tonight”. While passing the slow moving person I realized that is was a homeless person. He had a cart filled with stuff which I deemed to be everything he owned. I thought to myself that it’s crazy that homelessness actually exists in the United States of America.

I once watched an exposé on homeless people and they were saying that homeless people were homeless because they wanted to be. They did not want to follow the rules of society. Not even the rules of the homeless shelters and mission centers. Now that may be true for some, but that could not possibly be true for all homeless people. I believe that a lot of homeless people simply fall on hard times, due to finances, lack of family or drug/alcohol related problems. Whatever the case, everyone should have a place other than a cardboard box to call home.

Earlier in the day I had given a homeless guy with a sign the change out of my purse because I did not have any single dollars in it. Whenever I see a homeless person on the streets of Vegas I always give them a dollar. I do not care if they go buy a beer with it or go hop in a Benz around the corner afterwards. All I know is that if they were in need I helped a little.

After all those thoughts went through my head, I thought that If I was rich I would work on helping homeless people. With the media and general public suddenly talking about former homeless person Ted Turner and his miraculous rescue from the streets. I think that this is the perfect time for America to focus on helping more people like Ted. I wonder why rich people who are ambassadors and philanthropists do not work on helping the homeless or make homelessness one of their main causes. Is it because it might possibly be a waste of time? Is it because no one in this country really cares about the homeless people? How do you think we as Americans can eradicate homelessness? Or is it not possible?

What can we do to eliminate homelessness?

I think homelessness can be eradicated. We will need to focus on not homelessness, but focus on sheltering and cultivation. A person doesn't have a reason to be homeless in this society. Its so easy to get a leg up here. But what is easiness if the mind can not grasp it. The mind must grasp and see able the ability to shelter and be an asset to society. Work with us from the inside out and homelessness will no more exist. :)

Here in Toronto we have lots of social programs to help people. Our city council spends millions on the homelessness issues and yet most of these people prefer to panhandle and live on the streets unless they are given a free place to live.
Where I work downtown for the past 6 years, the same 5 people panhandle in the area and they could have had a job where I work long ago. We have some very aggressive ones too who have jumped on someone who refused to give them any money and robbed them. Happens all to often and the police will do nothing because they will be accused of harrassing the homeless.

Not everybody is homeless because they choose too. Some have addictions that take all their money, whereas others may have gotten laid off during the recession. It all depends on the situation. But i do know of someone who knew a crackhead and he would purposely break the law so he could go to jail and get 3 meals a day…*kanye shrug*

Interesting That You Should Have This Discussion… As I Was Walking Home From Work This Evening, I Saw A Homeless Man Sitting On The Park Bench With A Newspaper In His Hand… And, My First Impression Was To Sit Next To Him & Inquire About His Story, But I Couldn’t Do It.

I wouldn’t say no one cares about homeless people. If that were really the case we wouldn’t have as many homeless shelters as we do. We wouldn’t have as many food pantries as we do. I remember reading about a church in Manhattan that has been around for a good twenty or thirty years and they give so much food away and provide so many square meals 2 the needy it brought tears 2 my eyes.

Everyday you walk past a homeless person everyday, its your co~worker, follow worshipper, kids friends etc..it can happen to anyone….its not just the ones panhandling, there are families out there & you may never know, sometime what a person brings in(income) dont match what goes out & eventually something has to give ……rock bottom is not a good place to be but in a split second all can be there… Trust no one is homeless because they wanna be…….ijs

Hey Patricia I had a homeless man ask me for money, I went to give him $20 and his friend pushed me and grabbed my wallet. The two ran off laughing and it was a laugh to me too. Although ended up paying the visa bill that got racked up. But they needed it more than me. Getting one’s ID replaced is the biggest pain.

Today’s Toronto Sun has a reprt on this issue: 2011 Streets to Homes budget for homeless and panhandlers: $14.4 million (the province of Ontario kicks in 1/4 of it, Toronto funds the rest for its program. Number of people on Streets to Homes team:71; Number of panhandlers encountered since the fall of 2008: 1,061; Number of panhamndlers engaged: 678; Number of Panhandlers found Permanent Housing: 259; Number of Beggers given a Case Manager: 54; Number of people sleeping at Nathan Philips Square at City Hall on a Tuesday night: 20; Some Canadian cities have anti-panhandling by-laws..Toronto is the largest city in Canada and freely allows people to beg and panhandle. You are allowed to stand outside any store on the sidewalk and panhandle and the business owners cannot tell them to leave because they are on city property when on the sidewalk.

What can we really do about it? I care but kinda feel defeated… its hard enough for me just making sure I don’t become homeless. I’ll give money and food sometimes but sometimes I need the money and food I have for myself!

Not all homeless people are about drug. There are some good homeless in our community who did the best they can to obtain a job. I Volunteer to help out years ago and I befriended with them. I understand that some do not desire company but I meant one who doesn’t care for wealth or material but a friendship between the middle class and the lower and it work out well. The Government isn’t going to help at all rather it is up to us to make the changes whatever we like it or not. I know I’m working hard to help them get a job but have faith and things will turn out good in God’s way. :)

Speaking of homeless. Do you think its right for those who stand at the interstate with signs we’ll work for food? As Karin was saying someone could get hurt. If it were black ppl standing there it be a law against it, but bcuz its not I guess its ok. I never give them money bcuz if u can stand there for 8 hours and beg for money then you can find a job and work!

People try to maintain the idea that people choose to be homeless. I disagree. They are a very low percentile. I find it interesting that a good 80% of people in prisons have mental illnesses. People with mental illnesses usually self m…edicate with alcohol, pills, or street drugs if they aren’t diagnosed with an illness and don’t know they have one. When the glands in your brain that produce brain chemicals that make you feel happy, centered, relaxed, excited etc., (seratonin, dopamine, gammabutyric acid, endorphins) aren’t producing them very well, it causes people to be self destructive or commit crimes or just remain in deep depression. They beg for a living because they don’t know how they’ll feel from minute to minute. Imagine having an extreme mood change every 15 minutes or so. Imagine getting so tired you lay down and can’t move for days on end while you starve. The malfunction that stops these stimulant chemicals from being produced makes you a prisoner inside your own body! It is a living nightmare! Don’t get it confused with “Situational Depression” which is what normal people have. This is “Clinical Depression” and about 15% to 20% of society has it bad. People don’t acknowledge it as a legitimate illness because it is not physically apparent. I find it quite interesting that damn near the same percentage of people in the U.S. are homeless or inside the Prison (profit) system! Hmmmmm? Just a little food for thought!

You can’t help others until you help yourself but get to it if you can! Remember what Jesus said.

Whatever you’ve done to the least of these you have done it unto ME! ~ Mathew 25:40

hAHA! Yeah you don’t want to get me started. I have too much in me that wants to burst out! I have trouble condensing sometimes. This issue is a lot more complex than it seems to be. A lot of people think they have a grasp at what is generally logical to say but often they don’t realize we live in an upside down kingdom!

One reason is the fear we all have of being homeless ourselves, act like you don’t see them maybe they’ll go away..
