Mary J Blige On the Cover of Ebony – Talks Amy Winehouses Death and The Power of Love

Mary-J-Blige-Ebony-CoverMary J Blige takes it back to the motherland posing in a Leopard sheath and big overwhelming earrings on  Ebony Magazine’s October 2011 Issue.  Years ago, Mary J Blige had a terrible drinking problem that she says would have eventually killed her. inside she reflects on the dreadful day she learned of Amy Winehouse’s death. She also speaks  on past rumors, demons and finding her soul mate.

“When I got the text about Amy, I was lying down on the bed,’’ says Blige.  “I got up and read the message about her death and just lay back down again. I kept getting up and laying back down for some reason. I’d always wanted to work with Amy, so I just couldn’t believe it really.  And then it hit me—that could have been me. That really could have been me!”

The 40-year-old Blige has famously had issues with drug addiction, and while no illicit drugs were found in Winehouse’s system at autopsy, she long struggled with her own demons and drugs.., during an episode of VH1′s ‘Behind The Music’, Mary J Blige revealed that it was her husband Kendu who stepped in and helped her  battle her demons.

“The problem had snowballed into this thing that was bigger than me.  It was bigger than me.  And it was definitely going to kill me.  So I was like this is it and let’s go.     And I remember sitting on my bed.  I swear, I don’t know what death feels like, but I felt like my spirit was trying to leave my body.  And I was crying, and I was going please God, no no, not now, I don’t want this.  I prayed, like I remember saying a prayer I said God, send me someone to help me.”

The best thing that you can do to me [is] to challenge me to challenge myself. When I stopped drinking, it was will power.  It was prayer. It was really hard. But I cared so much about [Kendu], I didn’t wanna just be this alcoholic burden on him.  He doesn’t deserve for me to just be some you know, slum bucket alcoholic. And so, I took responsibility and I, cleaned up as much as I could. But it was hard.

The Power of Love!! It can heal you, instill you, motivate or encourage or it can just hold close and keep you safe at night.. Love can save you from yourself. Love can change the way you see life and many other things…  We are reminded in this interview how powerful love is. It reigns supreme above all.  But back to her Ebony interview, I’m getting a bit sick of the over airbrushing, I would love to look at a artists face and see some personality.. They photoshop all the personality away.. Just like when they do it to Beyonce.
