First Lady Michelle Obama graces the cover of Essence’s “Power Issue” for the month of October. Essence crowns Michelle one of the world’s most influential black women on its “2011 Power List.”
The “Power Issue” of the periodical, which arrives on newsstands on Sept. 12, highlights high profile women of color. Discussing Obama’s influence as first lady and the road that brought her there.
“My story to young people around this country and around the world is: Don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago,” she tells Essence. “Because I was there, and this is attainable. There is no magic to this. It is hard work….”
Celebrities also highlighted in this issue include Oprah Winfrey, Valerie Jarrett, Iyanla Vanzant and Jada Pinkett Smith.
The magazine also chronicles Michelle Obama’s recent trip to Africa with her two daughters and mother.
The quote excerpt from the magazine is actually a very powerful statement. Young black people often times need hope reinterated for them. People have forgotten that their dreams and goals are indeed quite possible and attainable if they are willing to do the hard work it takes to achieve them.
On a sidenote.. Whoever did her eyebrows for the shoot messed up.
